About Our Program

Brooms 4 Bags provides brooms, bags, and cleaning supplies to unhoused individuals who want to clean their area. By identifying and working with responsible individuals within the unhoused community, we provide cleaning supplies and reduce the health and safety risks associated with homelessness and drug addiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@brooms4bags.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Brooms4Bags provides street brooms, garbage bags, and a limited supply of sanitizer products to homeless individuals who desire to keep their living areas clean from garbage and disease.

Once individuals receive garbage bags and brooms they have the ability to clean and maintain the surrounding area - thereby building back self-respect as well as saving the time and effort it normally takes to have maintenance staff pick the trash from the ground and bag it.

Brooms4Bags believes:

  • All people deserve dignity and respect.
  • Everyone can learn.
  • Homelessness doesn't have to equal living in filth.
  • All good work builds character and responsibility and can lead to positive results.
  • Those who desire assistance and will help themselves deserve our support.
  • Repetition builds Confidence, Confidence builds Wisdom, Wisdom builds Strength and Strength builds Success.

Brooms4Bags works to identify responsible individuals within the non-housed community who desire better living and sanitary conditions. We then work with those individuals to provide the equipment, training, and motivation to clean their surrounding area.

Brooms4Bags is coordinated by and through SacNav - Sacramento Navigators, a fully registered 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization..

SacNav is dedicated to assisting those in need by providing the materials people need to keep their area clean, which we believe is a basic human need.

We're always looking for volunteers to help with our mission!

No - B4B provides only the cleaning materials listed. We fight drug addiction, we don't encourage or reward it.

Over a period of 90-days during which bags were distributed and the program explained to non-housed individuals in the Sacramento area, the concept went from receiving back 6 full bags for every 10- distributed, to now averaging 15 bags returned for every 10 distributed. As non-housed individuals learn about the program, they have started adding additional bags each day thereby cleaning an ever-widening area. Now B4B wants to expand on the tested concept and replicate the program regionally.

Wow, we appreciate the thought but we do not accept donations for the following reasons

  • We have found the brooms must be industrial-strength street brooms or they break. We also paint the brooms for easy identification or it sometimes motivates conflict.
  • To avoid any accusation of favoritism all brooms are the same style, shape, and color.
  • The plastic bags we use MUST be heavy-duty 2 mills or more. We pick up some fairly nasty stuff and thinner bags simply rip and cause a much bigger mess. We would LOVE to be able to go grab some trash bags at a big box store, but unfortunately, our garbage bags are custom ordered by nessesity.
  • Our bags are orange. Repetition and frequency build success and our experience has found that even something as simple as changing a bag color will impact the return rate.
